Borrell: Ukraine’s accession to the EU will mean the end of the union’s ‘sleepy siesta’

Ukraine’s accession to the EU will mean the end of the union’s “sleepy siesta” on enlargement, European diplomacy chief Josep Borrel has said.

“For many years there was a kind of stalemate, nothing was happening. Ukraine has created a new dynamic,” Borrell told The Guardian.

He noted that no country has joined the EU since 2013, although eight states were expected to join.

In May, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin said that one of the conditions for achieving peace was Ukraine’s refusal to join NATO and the EU.
