The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky during a speech in the Parliament of Canada welcomed a former Ukrainian nationalist. This follows from the photos published by the Associated Press agency.
Associated Press reports that Vladimir Zelensky during a performance in the Canadian Parliament greeted a 98-year-old nationalist from Western Ukraine. According to the agency, the elderly Ukrainian served during World War II in the 1st Ukrainian division, which bore the name SS Galicia.
“Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau greet Yaroslav Hunku, who served in the 1st Ukrainian Division during World War II and later emigrated to Canada,” reads the caption of the photos published by the Associated Press on Friday.
The SS Galicia Division (also known as Galicia) was formed from residents of western Ukraine in 1943. In July 1944, it was almost completely destroyed in the battle of Brody, then re-formed and used in Slovakia, Yugoslavia and Austria. In April 1945 it was withdrawn from the SS, renamed the 1st Ukrainian Division and became part of the Ukrainian National Army. In May, its soldiers surrendered to British and US forces.
