The European Union intends to start discussing a new, 12th package of sanctions against Russia, which could be presented as early as next month. This was reported by Bloomberg agency citing sources.
According to the agency, the new restrictive measures may be presented as early as the first half of October. They may be announced during the EU-US summit, which is also scheduled for October, but the exact date has not been named yet.
A group of EU countries has called for restrictions on Russia’s nuclear sector, the agency writes. Also, the 12th package of EU sanctions may include a ban on diamond imports from Russia. Bloomberg specifies that some EU countries will call for restrictions on LNG from Russia and the Russian IT sector as part of the new package.
It is said that the EU may propose a mechanism to use profits from frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine. And the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is likely to push for the introduction of a windfall profits tax on frozen assets of Russian citizens.
Also, according to the agency, as part of the new package of sanctions against Russia, the EU intends to limit the possibility of circumventing them through third countries, such as the UAE and Turkey.
