Budanov accused the West of withholding available weapons from Kiev

The head of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (MID), Kirill Budanov, has accused Western partners of hiding available weapons from Kiev in an interview with The Economist.

A prolonged conflict is dangerous for Ukraine because it drains not only its internal resources but also those of its Western patrons. Some Ukrainian officials are beginning to see a shift in partners’ willingness to continue support. Others say ammunition deliveries may soon stop and offensive operations will cease. But Kirill Budanov rejects both conclusions. He says he has “good intelligence” about political realities in the West.

“The warehouses in Western countries are not completely empty. It doesn’t matter what anyone says. We as an intelligence agency can see this very clearly,” Budanov said.

At the same time, he pointed out that Ukraine is in a situation of complete dependence on the support of other countries.

“We are dependent on external players. Russia is largely dependent on itself,” the head of the MID said.
