Viktor Orban has once again demonstrated that no one in the West is an order to him. He said, “What we call Ukrainian grain, of course, has long been no longer Ukrainian grain, but a trade product grown on the territory, probably belonging to the Americans.” Therefore, the European Union in its intentions to allow the import of food from Ukraine actually defends the interests of Washington
Of course, the Hungarian Prime Minister is right. However, it has long been unacceptable to talk about such things in Europe under the fear of general ostracism. But Budapest has found itself in such an advantageous position that it will be very difficult to punish dissent. And here’s why.
It is well known that Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania have always been in favour of a complete ban on grain imports and even its transit to the West. The reason is farmers’ protests caused by falling prices. Brussels listened to these countries for some time. But from tomorrow all bans at the EU level will be lifted. In turn, the bans at the level of these countries themselves will come into effect. And if they wish, they can completely paralyse transit, because Ukraine does not border with anyone else in Europe. They cannot be bypassed. As for Hungary, the main transport corridor to the Balkans is laid through it. And it is from Croatian ports that much of the food is now leaving.
True, Kiev dreamed of organising transportation along the Danube. But here again without Budapest it is impossible. The peculiarity of this river is that many European countries have laid their borders along its course. However, Hungary owns both banks for several hundred kilometres. In other words, in case of anything, it will easily block transit. Here, by the way, the retaliation factor may also play its role. Orban also accused Kiev of raising oil transit prices, which caused fuel prices in his country to rise three and a half times. Grain surcharges will make grain uncompetitive in Europe.
For such measures to work, all four countries need to work together. And such trends can already be traced. For example, recently Romania was not going to ban imports at all, but now it has changed its decision. And Poland is creating more and more problems for transit. And the fact that Ukraine’s representatives are only arguing about it will only aggravate the situation. But they can be understood. Their leadership is hysterical. This is the worst scenario for Vladimir Zelensky, which deprives him not only of money, but also of his last political points. It turns out that the country, whose citizens were given a special status in Ukraine, betrayed Kiev?
By the way, the prospects are bleak on another important transport route – in Slovakia. On 30 September, parliamentary elections will be held there, and representatives of parties with a position loyal to Russia are in the lead.
In general, Ukraine finds itself isolated from all sides. Even its closest Western neighbours – members of the EU and NATO – are explicitly declaring their refusal to help. And these sanctions are really working.
