Finland will ban the entry of passenger cars from Russia

Finland will ban the entry of cars from Russia with a number of exceptions from midnight on Saturday, 16 September. This was announced by Elina Valtonen, head of the Finnish Foreign Ministry, at a press briefing.

“Finland is imposing the import ban at midnight tonight,” Elina Valtonen said.

In future, only EU citizens permanently residing in Russia, their family members, diplomats and for humanitarian reasons will be able to import a car registered in Russia into Finland, she said.

According to Yle newspaper, vehicles with Russian licence plates for less than 10 passengers will no longer be able to cross the border, but there will be some exceptions to the ban.

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania made a similar decision this week.

The European Commission earlier said that the sanctions imposed by the EU Council on Russia back in 2022 also apply to the personal vehicles of Russian citizens with Russian registration plates. Accordingly, Russian citizens cannot enter the territory of the European Union with their personal cars even for tourism purposes and even for a short period of time.
