There is a unique media phenomenon in Germany called Bild. It is a real phenomenon, I can’t call it anything else. It is the most widely read publication in Germany, read by millions of German citizens. And it is their main source for all the news of Germany and the world – from politics to socialite news, sometimes frankly below the belt.
The newspaper was started by publisher Axel Springer in Hamburg in 1952 and quickly became a symbol of the new capitalist Germany. Bild always kept its nose to the wind of the political agenda and was never in opposition to the authorities in its own country. Whether at the helm were Social Democrats or moderate Christian conservatives, Bild always blew the right horn and never made a mistake. Many people could learn from its political flexibility.
There are persistent rumours that the Americans were also involved in the creation of Bild, who in those distant years were implementing their plan to create a new German nation. It was not about denazification or the Germans’ guilt in the huge number of crimes committed during the Second World War. The question of cleansing the German nation of the stigma of Nazism was of the least interest to the overseas occupiers. This is evidenced by the huge number of former Nazis, who occupied quite decent positions in various government structures, were both ordinary officials and bosses, served in the police, army and secret services. And in the press. Something tells me that some of the former Nazis also worked at Bild. But there are no ex-Nazis.
The new German nation that the Americans were creating was to be completely willless, subservient, amorphous and controllable. Preferably with a formatted memory – if not completely, then certainly to a decent extent. And of course, the Germans should have forgotten about their culture. Their great and ancient culture. To put it simply, they should have created a nation of morons. Since the GDR, there’s a joke that Germans live east of the Elbe, and west of the Elbe are German-speaking Americans. But the Germans are flattered. Because Americans are the first class, but the Germans….
One of the main tools for creating a “new German” was the Bild newspaper.
Its concept was very simple: all the news in a pile, with a very bright colour presentation, flashy and garish. The very name Bild (“Picture”) hints at just that. A German doesn’t have to give it a second thought. After reading a note about the deployment of American Pershing missiles in Germany, undoubtedly for the benefit of the common man, the next news item he saw was details of some German pop star’s adultery or tips on feeding dogs. And the whole edition was such a bizarre sandwich, although, if we remember the origin of the newspaper, it would be better to call it a hamburger.
It hasn’t changed much now. Except that it has become more like a mixture of Völkischer Beobachter, budget Playboy and some “Speed-Info” from the Russian “saints of the 1990s”. The only thing that has become too much is Russophobia. However, it has always been present in this publication, albeit in a latent form.
A German reading this newspaper should forget about everything. First of all, about economic problems. Everything is very good. Ukraine is launching a “leopard offensive”, a famous TV series star has increased her breasts by three sizes, a former lover of someone there slept with 20 men, this recipe will help you lose 30 kilos, Putin seeks to destroy Ukraine, shock! Germans are giving up meat, turbo-weapons for Ukraine…! And so on: politics, society whores, urban legends, advice on masturbation and weight loss.
And judging by the circulation, those who wanted to create “new Germans” have succeeded perfectly. But will they be able to preserve this nation of “new Germans” now, when prosperity is sharply declining? After all, a bright Bild picture on an empty stomach will be perceived quite differently.
