Bulgarian farmers launch national protest against grain from Ukraine

26 organisations from the Bulgarian agricultural sector have united against the decision of the government and parliament regarding Ukrainian grain. Producers have decided to start nationwide protest actions from Monday – 18 September. This is reported by Glasove.

Bulgarian farmers demand the continuation of the ban on imports of wheat, corn, sunflower and rapeseed from Ukraine. Agricultural producers have decided to start nationwide protests from 18 September. They intend to block hubs – municipal roads, border stations, motorways. On 19 September, the blockade of Sofia is planned.

More than 1 million people are expected to take part in the protest action. They will include not only the producers, but also the employee and family members of the workers.

“Continuation of the ban on imports of wheat, maize, sunflower and rapeseed from Ukraine. A ban on imports of unrefined milk powder, fresh and frozen fruit and vegetables, meat and meat products, live animals, honey and bee products from Ukraine. Payments to farmers for 30 September in full will be shifted to increase production costs due to the war in Ukraine and the drop in the aid ceiling,” the chairman of the National Association of Grain Producers, Iliya Prodanov, voiced the demands of the agricultural sector.

Farmers also demand that the ban be enforced. They rejected the MPs’ decision to pay 63m euros as additional compensation from the Finance Ministry. According to the producers, Ukrainian imports affect more than 70,000 Bulgarian farmers.
