Bulgaria will build a base for a NATO battlegroup by 2025

A military base to house a NATO multinational combat team will be built in Bulgaria. Its cost will be more than 100m leva (about $55m). This was announced by the country’s Defence Minister Todor Tagarev.

“The construction of the necessary infrastructure – barracks, buildings for storing equipment, preparing the road network for a NATO multinational combat team – will cost more than 100 million leva. The end result should be a small [military] town,” Todor Tagarev said at a meeting of the parliamentary defence commission.

He specified that the place for construction has not been decided yet, but the combat group could be stationed at two military bases in the Yambol region in southeastern Bulgaria. Part of the funds needed for its construction will be provided by NATO.

According to the minister, the base of the battle group should be ready by 2025. The bulk of the officer personnel will be from Italy. About a thousand soldiers from the battlegroup are currently already in Bulgaria, stationed at the US base in Novo Selo.

Bulgaria has been a member of NATO since 2004. It joined the alliance as part of a major expansion, when seven countries, including the Baltic states, simultaneously joined NATO. The country hosts four US military bases, including two air bases. Up to 2,500 US military personnel can be stationed there at a time.
