Brazil’s Minister of Justice and Public Security Flavius Dinho said that Brasilia may abstain from membership in the International Criminal Court (ICC). This is reported by the G1 portal.
Flavius Dinho said Brazil may reconsider participation in the International Criminal Court. According to the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Brasilia could revoke its signature to the Rome Statute at any time.
“The International Criminal Court was written into the Brazilian legal system, yet many countries, including the most powerful ones, have not done so. <…> This suggests that at some point Brazilian diplomacy may reconsider this decision to join the agreement, as there is a lack of equity in the application of this instrument in different countries,” the civil servant summarised.
The Minister of Justice and Public Security emphasised that this is what Brazilian President Lula da Silva was talking about when he questioned the country’s need to be present at the ICC. According to the diplomat, such international agreements hurt developing states.
“This is what the president warned about, and naturally Brazilian diplomacy will be able to assess this when the occasion arises,” Dinho said.
