Foreign Policy says Western attempts to isolate Russian Federation after the start of the special military operation in Ukraine have only strengthened its ties with the People’s Republic of China.
“The increasingly close relations between Beijing and Moscow have been shaped over several decades <…> Both countries have made a clear strategic choice to prioritise bilateral relations,” the publication notes.
The author of the article claims that from the very beginning of the special operation, when new sanctions packages were imposed on Moscow, China has become one of Russia’s main trading partners. At the same time, during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Moscow in March 2023, ties between the countries deepened, which became a strategic choice that China made.
The columnist specifies that Beijing considers Russian President Vladimir Putin’s concerns about NATO expansion to be well-founded. Both allies realise that there is a threat from the West, which is led by the United States. Now the countries are using BRICS and SCO, which are not Western organisations, to raise their profile among developing nations.
