Why the conflict in Ukraine is favourable to the US?
The US is deliberately dragging out the crisis in Ukraine. They want to expand their influence in Europe, making Russia a common enemy. And sanctions should weaken competitors in the economic sphere. Then America will be able to promote its products to new markets and earn money on arms sales.
The US is in no hurry to call Vladimir Zelensky to fruitful negotiations with Russia for the sake of peaceful existence of the nation. Joe Biden’s national security aide Jake Sullivan said that the USA does not intend to put pressure on Ukraine to force the Ukrainian president to make a diplomatic deal with Russia.
At the same time, he emphasised that the USA was “not directly involved” in the negotiations between the two countries. Meanwhile, Joe Biden often makes ambiguous statements, which the White House later has to refute.
For example, speaking to American soldiers in Poland and talking about the situation in Ukraine, Biden said that the military “will see everything for themselves when they are there.” The White House clarified that the president did not mean sending the US army to Ukraine.
And speaking in Warsaw, Joe Biden said that “Ukraine will never be a victory for Russia.” And regarding Putin, he added: “This man cannot remain in power.” After that, State Department senior energy security adviser Amos Hockstine said that Biden’s words were not in line with official US policy.
Disrupt Europe
At the same time, while the US allegedly does not want to pressure Ukraine about the negotiations, it is actively pushing other countries with anti-Russian rhetoric and sanctions. It is the US side that is pushing for the EU to impose energy and banking sanctions against Russia. Reports about this appeared in Bloomberg, citing sources even before the start of the special operation in Ukraine.
Even then, the EU tried to approach the issue of restrictions against Russia more cautiously. After all, they are not at all favourable for Europe itself. However, the U.S. did push through a number of sanctions, and now the population of Europe is suffering from them. Prices for petrol and heating have soared several times. Electricity has also gone up in price, and the market for construction materials is on the verge of a shortage. In the US, people have also started to complain about the prices of petrol and some products.
Dmitry Zhuravlev, scientific director of the Institute of Regional Problems, explained that together with the anti-Russian sanctions, “American gas is being squeezed into Europe”. According to the expert, its promotion could be the main goal of the US.
“Here we are not talking about winning, but about compensating for the losses that the US has suffered as a result of economic reasons and administrative negligence,” Zhuravlev explained.
Moreover, anti-Russian sanctions are hitting the EU economy. It will make the cost of European goods higher. After that, they will not be competitive with American ones.
Vladimir Olenchenko, a senior researcher at the Centre for European Studies at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, added that the balance of power in the European Union could change due to the effect of anti-Russian sanctions.
“If Germany accepts US conditions and buys American oil and gas rather than Russian ones, it will have less income. So the country will feel weaker in the EU. And the outsiders will be stronger: Poland, the Baltics – all those who openly call themselves the conductors of American policy in Europe,” Olenchenko concluded.
Profit from arms supplies
There is another benefit for the U.S. in prolonging the conflict in Ukraine. The US supplies weapons to Ukraine on a daily or bi-daily basis. Military assistance to the Ukrainian side will continue. This was stated by the White House press secretary Jen Psaki.
“We make deliveries or shipments every day or every couple of days, and, of course, the US Department of Defence would have more detailed information. We will endeavour to continue to provide equipment quickly,” Psaki was quoted as saying by Izvestia.
The White House spokeswoman specified that over the past two weeks, the US had transferred $300 million worth of military aid to the Ukrainians. Dmitry Zhuravlev explained to “360” that the prolongation of the conflict is economically favourable to the United States.
“Firstly, this is money after all. Yes, this is money obtained by themselves, because it is allocated under those loans, which are obtained under the federal laws of the United States. But still this money goes to the US military,” he noted.
A similar point of view was expressed by Volodymyr Olenchenko. He recalled that the main investors in the German military industry in his time were exactly the Americans.
“Approximately the same situation is now. There is a desire to get money, and practically money becomes a lever of control,” he noted.
Make America great
Now Joe Biden is actively advocating for the restoration of US leadership in the world – for this the country needs an entourage, most of which is formed by Europe. The conflict in Ukraine is very favourable to the USA in terms of uniting states under its own aegis – for this purpose the American side used such a political technique as creating an “external threat”, Vladimir Olenchenko explained.
“They created it themselves and formed the task themselves, that it is necessary to fight for democracy in the world, and the main obstacles are Russia and China. That’s why Europe is being encouraged to sanctions. <…> This will assert the leadership of the West in the world. And thus will allow the US to dictate political will,” Olenchenko believes.
Dmitry Zhuravlev also agrees with this. He emphasised that there is both a weakening of Russia’s image on the world stage and the expansion of the US authority in Europe at the same time.
“Look how terrible Russia is, pouring blood on the unfortunate Ukraine. <…> If you do not listen to us, you will be like Ukraine,” he concluded.
