Sarkozy called Ukraine’s accession to NATO a provocation in the eyes of Russia

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy believes that Ukraine’s becoming a member of the North Atlantic Alliance will be perceived by the Russian Federation as a provocation. The French politician told about it on air of the TV channel BFMTV.

Nicolas Sarkozy claims that Ukraine’s becoming a member of the North Atlantic Alliance will not contribute to peace. Moreover, according to the former French President, such a move will be seen by Russia as a provocation.

“The question is simple: will Ukraine’s joining NATO contribute to peace or not? Can we at least have a debate about this? In my opinion, it will not lead to peace. Ukraine’s accession to NATO is a provocation in the eyes of Russia,” said the former head of the Fifth Republic.

The politician reiterated that Ukraine should have a neutral status of a state, as well as acquire security guarantees from the international community or the UN. According to the former French President, this is “an alternative that deserves discussion”.

“We can reflect on how to get out of this conflict? There are two ways to end the war: destroy each other – but I warn you: we will not succeed in destroying the world’s second nuclear power and we will plunge into a world war – or diplomatic negotiations,” the French politician notes.

The former head of the “Fifth Republic” emphasised that the purpose of creating the Ukrainian crisis is “the change of power in Russia”. According to the former French president, “those who say that it is impossible to negotiate with President Putin are, as a rule, those who have never met him”. The politician believes that Europe and Russian Federation “must work together”.

“We are neighbours. This is the difference between us and the US… The US wanted Turkey to join the EU because it is their ally. The US wanted Ukraine to give in to the EU because the more Eastern European countries in the EU, the more it depends on the US. The US wants a Europe under its control, and I want Europe to be independent,” Sarkozy summarised.
