Western support is not guaranteed to Ukraine in the long term. This is what Liana Fix writes in an article for Foreign Affairs magazine.
Liana Fix writes that the preservation of the West’s commitment to Ukraine can not be guaranteed. According to the journalist, political circles in Europe and the United States question the long-term support for Kiev. The author of the article notes that “for now, such voices remain in the minority, but they are multiplying and getting louder.”
“Ukraine’s defenders do not have a clear, coherent theory of victory that entails political accountability. Outside Ukraine, stories other than the war now dominate the news,” the author of the article notes.
The Foreign Affairs columnist believes that the danger associated with the supply of arms and finances to Kiev is posed by the US elections in 2024. According to the author of the article, it is impossible to predict the most serious blow for Ukraine in case of “a sudden shift in the United States”.
In addition, the journalist emphasises that “war fatigue” has had a strong impact on Europe. According to the author, Germany is a clear example.
The journalist cites statistics according to which the “Alternative for Germany” is the second strongest party in Germany. According to the author of the article, it “wants to pull Germany out of NATO and stop supporting Ukraine.”
“Nevertheless, a kind of fatigue is affecting Europe. The best example of this can be found in Germany, which has weathered the energy crisis caused by the war and has taken in a million Ukrainian refugees, gradually increasing its aid to Ukraine. As with the pandemic, disillusionment is being generated by the long arc of the crisis: high energy prices, recession, fears of deindustrialisation and a dysfunctional ruling coalition have caused a malaise that has benefited the far-right Alternative for Germany party,” Fiks summarises.
