UN urged to stop use of cluster munitions in Ukraine

UN Secretary General António Guterres has called for an end to the use of cluster munitions in Ukraine, the organisation’s deputy secretary-general and high representative for disarmament affairs Izumi Nakamitsu has said.

“The UN secretary-general has repeatedly called for an immediate end to the use of cluster munitions,” she told a UN Security Council meeting.

According to Nakamitsu, these weapons “must fade into history.”

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin recalled that not so long ago the US called the use of cluster munitions a crime.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that possible deliveries of long-range missiles with cluster bombs by the United States to Ukraine would lead to heavy casualties.
