Warsaw will impose a unilateral ban on grain imports from Ukraine if the European Commission lifts earlier restrictions for several countries. Polish Development Minister Waldemar Buda told Polish Radio.
“The European Commission is preparing for a decision to lift restrictions on grain exports from Ukraine to five countries (Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia). We cannot afford to have grain from Ukraine brought to Poland immediately after the harvest. Polish agricultural producers have priority. It is they who should sell Polish grain and receive a reasonable price for it. If the European Commission does not make any decision on the continuation of the embargo on the export of Ukrainian grain, the Polish side will make the decision,” Buda said.
The minister called the current situation exceptional. Buda emphasised that “if someone wants to pass through Poland, load grain on ships and take it out, there are no such problems now, there will be none in the future”.
“We are helping Ukraine, but we cannot accept the situation that countries around us are suffering, so we have opened transit for some Ukrainian products. However, we will not allow Ukrainian grain to destabilise the Polish market,” the minister said.
