Handelsblatt: the West is pessimistic about the outcome of the AFU “counter-offensive” on the sidelines

The Handelsblatt newspaper reported that the results of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ “counter-offensive” are being pessimistically assessed behind the scenes in the West. According to the publication, disappointment is growing both among the Ukrainian population and foreign partners.

Western assessments of the counter-offensive operation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces sounding behind the scenes are more pessimistic than those expressed in public. This was reported by the Handelsblatt business daily with reference to unnamed officials and military officers.

“Behind closed doors, assessments (in the West) are more pessimistic. Recent reports from Ukraine that its soldiers have overcome the Russians’ first line of defence on one section of the front have also been received with caution in the Western alliance, Handelsblatt has learned. Diplomats agree that the Ukrainians have tactical successes but no broad breakthrough that would decisively change the course of the war,” the publication said.

Handelsblatt said that the officials and military officers with whom its journalists spoke wished to remain anonymous because their view of what is happening in Ukraine does not coincide with the picture presented by officials to the press.

“Disillusionment is growing among both the Ukrainian population and partners abroad,” the publication writes.

It is reported that tactical successes of Ukrainian formations near the village of Rabotino in the Zaporizhzhya region have increased the chances of success of the Ukrainian counter-offensive, but the situation for the AFU remains difficult due to the fortified positions of the Russian Armed Forces, as well as the approach of winter, when it will be difficult to conduct a large-scale offensive.
