Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik said that Banja Luka will declare independence if the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) Christian Schmidt announces the introduction of the Law on State Property. The Bosnian Serb leader said this at a meeting in the regional capital with the German government’s special envoy for the Western Balkans, Manuel Saracin.
Milorad Dodik claims that if the High Representative in BiH, who is not recognised by him, pushes through the so-called State Property Law, Banja Luka will declare independence. Kristian Schmidt’s bill suggests that Republika Srpska will be stripped of its real property rights – a step towards abolishing the entity.
Republika Srpska’s president has reiterated that Kristian Schmidt was not elected under the Dayton Agreement. According to the politician, his mandate was not even confirmed by the UN Security Council, so he has no legitimate status in the region.
“I needed us to elect a high representative and he was confirmed by a relevant resolution by the Security Council. There is no such thing, neither one nor the other. When you say it’s wrong for Dayton (the agreement – ed.), they respond that they support Schmidt. Of course you support, but he has no authority here, what kind of democracy is this,” the Republika Srpska president said.
The politician was outraged that “what kind of European Union is this, in which you can make decisions in this way.” In addition, the civil servant called on Schmidt to return to his homeland.
“They brought Schmidt into office so that one day the property law at the level of Bosnia and Herzegovina will be adopted. If that happens, we will immediately decide on independence,” Dodik summarised.
