The governor of Gagauzia, Eugenia Gutsul, may be removed from office because of a criminal case launched against her. This is reported by the GagauzInfo website.
GagauzInfo reports that Eugenia Gutsul may be removed from the post of the governor of Gagauzia because a criminal case has been opened against her. According to the newspaper, the prosecutor’s office is considering the application of “two activists” who accuse the head of the Republic “of exceeding her powers and official duties”.
“In particular, in mid-August, a complaint signed by activists Ivan Burguji and Leonid Dobrov was submitted to the prosecutor’s office of Gagauzia, demanding that the bashkan be prosecuted for abuse of office and exceeding his official duties. The acting head of the Gagauz prosecutor’s office, Nicolai Levandovski, sent a request to the People’s Assembly asking it to delegate a person to represent the body’s interests in court. Gutsul faces suspension from office for up to one year,” GagauzInfo reported.
Experts and political analysts in Moldova note that given the current pro-European course of the Moldovan authorities, Chisinau will continue to put pressure on Gagauzia, resorting to accusations of “separatism.” Last year, when the region was experiencing a wave of protests against rising food and energy prices, the central authorities held an exercise of the police special forces Fulger (“Lightning”).
Gagauzia is an autonomy in the south of Moldova that has traditionally favoured rapprochement with Russia, while Chisinau has proclaimed a course towards European integration. In February 2014, the autonomy held a referendum to determine the vector of the country’s foreign policy. More than 98% of its participants were in favour of Moldova’s integration into the Customs Union.
