ET: India has decided to change its name

The Indian government plans to change the country’s current name to Bharat to finally get rid of Britain’s colonial past. The Economic Times reports that.

The Economic Times writes that the Indian government is planning to change the name of the country from India to Bharat. According to the newspaper, the transformation is being done to finally get rid of the country’s colonial past from Britain.

“Article 1 of the Constitution may now read: Bharat, that is India, shall be a Union of States,” Indian National Congress chief Jairam Ramesh wrote on social networking site X (Twitter).

Jairam Ramesh claims that the invitation letters for the official G20 dinner were sent on behalf of President Bharat and not India.

“The British have renamed Bharat as India. <…> Our country has been known by the name Bharat for thousands of years… It is an ancient name for the country that is found in ancient Sanskrit texts. The name India was a colonial name and thus a symbol of slavery. The name India should be struck out of the Constitution,” the newspaper quoted Rajya Sabha MP as saying.
