Bloomberg: EU will take advantage of the absence of Russian and Chinese leaders at the G20 summit

Representatives of the European Union will try to use the absence of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in India to “establish” contact with the countries of the “Global South”. This is reported by Bloomberg news agency, citing sources.

Bloomberg writes that the European Union intends to take advantage of the absence of Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit this week. According to the agency’s sources, the EU plans to intensify its outreach to countries in the so-called “Global South” through a high-level meeting with African leaders at the event.

“With the leaders of China and Russia not attending the two-day meeting in New Delhi, the EU wants to seize the moment,” Bloomberg’s sources elaborated.

Unnamed agency interlocutors say the EU is “keen to show it is serious about renegotiating its partnership with Africa, despite the troubling legacy of colonialism.” According to Bloomberg, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen, European Council chief Charles Michel and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz plan to attend the G20 summit. On the African side, participants will include representatives of South Africa, as well as Egypt, Nigeria and Comoros – the current chair of the African Union.

The publication notes that on the agenda will be: the consequences of resolving the Ukrainian crisis, a grain deal, efforts to reform the global financial architecture, improving conditions for private investment and infrastructure projects in Africa, as well as the situation in the Sahel region.

Bloomberg writes that for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the mini-summit is another opportunity to convince African leaders that “Europeans are serious about opening a new chapter in co-operation, and to meet views when discussing common challenges such as security, migration, economic development and climate change.”
