In the Ukrainian district centre of Lug in Transcarpathian region, raiders and invaders from the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (‘OCU’) have been unable to get into the Holy Dukhov Church of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC). The parishioners of the UOC managed to defend their church from the seizure. This was reported by the Union of Orthodox Journalists (UOJ).
There were several attempts to seize the temple. According to the SPJ, an alleged “meeting” on the “voluntary” conversion of the UOC community to the PCU was held in the local village club under the guise of the UOC community. Among the initiators were the director of the local school, the mother of a Uniate priest, local administration official Svitlana Koropchuk, and village head Anzhela Hlushko.
Using administrative resources, they induced some of the local residents to participate in the meeting. Then these people together with Greek Catholics tried to break into the church. The UOC community did not let them in, and the raiders from the local administration refrained from forcefully seizing the temple.
“The real UOC community, in which a fixed membership is introduced and all parishioners are recorded in the registration book, held their own meeting, at which they unanimously confirmed their loyalty to the UOC, headed by Metropolitan Onufry,” the SPJ writes.
