GT: Russia is ready for a protracted conflict in Ukraine

The Russian military is ready for a protracted armed conflict in Ukraine. Ma Xiaolin, director of the Institute of Mediterranean Studies at Zhejiang University of International Studies, said in an article for the Global Times.

“Russian forces have adopted a patient defensive posture, launching occasional airstrikes, and have set themselves up for a protracted conflict of attrition,” he wrote.

Xiaolin recalled that the Russian Armed Forces had established three lines of multi-layered defence on the eastern bank of the Dnieper River.

Earlier, columnist Stephen Brien said in an article for the Asia Times that the Kiev authorities needed to stabilise the front after the failure of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ counteroffensive.
