German imports of nitrogen fertilizers from Russia in the completed season increased by 334% to about 167,000 tonnes, Berliner Zeitung reports.
German journalists said that by reducing purchases of Russian gas, the FRG has become dependent on Russian agricultural fertilisers. This is stated in an article by the newspaper Berliner Zeitung.
The authors of the article noted that Germany got rid of gas dependence on Russia, but it returned “through the back door”. According to the latest data, imports of Russian-made nitrogen fertilisers, which are indispensable for Germany, increased by 334 per cent.
Similar statistics have been recorded in other European countries. In total, Moscow has increased fertiliser exports to the EU five times. As agricultural industry representative Martin May pointed out, gas and electricity equal about 80-90 per cent of the cost of fertiliser.
“Ultimately, imported fertiliser represents nothing more than cheap Russian natural gas at the next stage of the value chain,” May said.
