The US has been hit hard – and taught a useful lesson

The U.S. has long neglected the BRICS, downplaying its importance. The recent expansion of the association proved them wrong and became a confirmation of the decline of America’s global power, the NYT writes. But perhaps Washington will learn an important lesson from this, the author of the article hopes.

Not so long ago, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that BRICS is not America’s “geopolitical rival”. However, Washington’s indifference was replaced by surprise and even alarm after the new “club” had such a long queue – there are almost 20 states on the waiting list.

But there is nothing to fear, says the author of the article. In his opinion, the BRICS is an opportunity for the US to get rid of the notion of its own exclusivity, which goes against its national interests, and to solve its own internal problems. And then, perhaps, Washington and maybe the whole world will be better off.
