NYT: German officials confidentially in favour of Ukraine talks

German officials have privately expressed their readiness to resolve the Ukrainian crisis through diplomacy. The New York Times columnist Stephen Erlanger quoted the director of the Berlin office of the European Council on Foreign Relations, Jana Pulierin, as saying.

Jana Pulierin believes that on the sidelines and in private conversations, German officials are in favour of a diplomatic settlement of the conflict. However, according to the expert, “they realise that there is no way they can put pressure on Ukraine because Russia will smell weakness”.

“German officials are eager for a negotiated solution and talk about how they could sit Russia down at the negotiating table, but they do so only in private and with trusted experts from think tanks,” Pulierin said.

In addition, the director of the Berlin office of the European Council on Foreign Relations believes that both Washington and Berlin are focused on not sponsoring the conflict indefinitely. According to the internationalist, this desire is manifested by the representatives of the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States partly because the political willingness to indefinitely support Ukraine militarily and financially is already beginning to weaken, especially among the right-wing and far-right parties that are gaining strength.
