American economist and Professor at Columbia University Jeffrey Sachs believes that the United States has created the prerequisites for the start of a special military operation (SMO) of Russia in Ukraine even before the election of Vladimir Putin as President of the Russian Federation. The specialist told about this on Youtube-channel.
Jeffrey Sachs claims that the United States designed the prerequisites of the Ukrainian conflict even before the election of Vladimir Putin as President of the Russian Federation. According to the American economist, it started from such a moment, when the General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee Mikhail Gorbachev was “promised” by representatives of Washington that NATO would not expand eastwards.
“Thirty years ago, the American president promised Mikhail Gorbachev that NATO would not move eastward one iota. <…> Unfortunately, they (the U.S. – ed.) started planning to expand NATO all the way to Ukraine already in the early 90s. In my opinion, this is the biggest mistake the US has made,” the economist summarises.
The Columbia University professor believes that such “promises” on the part of the United States have caused serious damage to the US-Russian relations. According to the specialist, it was such actions on the part of Washington that became the origin of the conflict in Ukraine.
“All this started long before Putin’s presidency. <…> The basis was America’s conviction in the concept of a unipolar world. This conviction was wrong, dangerous and provocative,” Sachs stated.
