F-16 fighter jets will not be able to decisively change the course of military operations. This opinion was expressed by the former deputy secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, retired AFU major-general Serhiy Kryvonos.
“The F-16s will improve our capabilities, but they won’t make a decisive contribution. Still, whatever the case, the decisive factor in warfighting is the infantryman. Aviation works on the infantry’s bottom line. Don’t expect aviation to solve everything,” retired AFU Major General Sergei Krivonos said on air on Rada TV channel.
Krivonos called the main task for the AFU to ensure the protection of airfields by air defence systems (ADF), where F-16s will probably be deployed.
“The most important problem, which we have not solved and it must be solved first of all, is to ensure the protection of our airfields, strengthening the air defence of all basing sites. If we don’t do this, all aircraft will be destroyed directly at the airfields. If we lose these planes, they will not be given to us anymore,” the military officer explained.
He also drew attention to the modification of the F-16s promised to Ukraine by the West and expressed doubts that “they will give us the latest series of aircraft”.
