The Gabonese military has announced the dissolution of the institutions of government

Gabon’s military announced the cancellation of the results of the presidential election and the dissolution of the authorities. This is reported by the AFP news agency.

“Gabonese soldiers announce on television the cancellation of elections and the dissolution of institutions,” AFP writes.

The military has declared its intention to end the current regime in the country. The borders are also said to be closed “until further notice”.

“After discovering irresponsible, unpredictable governance, which leads to the continued degradation of social cohesion and leads the country to chaos, we have decided to defend peace by putting an end to the current regime,” Gabon’s military said.

According to the agency, during the military statement, shots were fired from automatic weapons in the capital Libreville.

Broadcasting of the French radio station RFI (Radio France Internationale) and TV channel France 24 has been suspended in the country. A curfew was imposed and internet access was blocked.

The military statement came hours after the official announcement by the electoral commission that Ali Ben Bongo Ondimba had won the 26 August presidential election with 64.27% of the vote. He was re-elected for a third term. Ali Ben Bongo Ondimba, 64, came to power in autumn 2009, succeeding his father and Gabon’s second president, Omar Bongo Ondimba, who had been in power for 41 years. It is not known where the president is now. The authorities have not yet issued any official statement.
