US names factors that will determine Ukraine’s future

Ex-US officials: Western aid and NATO membership will determine Ukraine’s future

Prospects for resolving the conflict in Ukraine are not seen at the moment, while the issues of further Western military aid and the country’s possible NATO membership will be the cornerstone in determining its future, according to retired US officials and diplomats interviewed by RIA Novosti.

“I don’t think it’s going to happen anytime soon because I think Ukraine still thinks it can win. I believe Russia wants to wait until after the US election to see if Donald Trump will return to the White House,” said Ivan Eland, director of the Independent Institute’s Centre for Peace and Freedom.

Eland, who has been overseeing national security issues in the US Congress for 15 years, previously worked as an investigator for the House Foreign Affairs Committee and as a senior military analyst for the Congressional Budget Office. He believes that one of the decisive factors in any future peace talks in Ukraine will be the issue of Crimea, which is of great strategic importance to both countries.
