The West is supplying Ukraine with outdated Leopard 1 tanks – Financial Times

Most Western countries are poisoning Ukraine with the outdated Leopard 1 tank in order not to waste their own reserves of the new Leopard 2 tank. This was reported by the Financial Times newspaper.

“Many capitals (of Western countries – ed.) believe it is more convenient to abandon the often decommissioned Leopard 1 than expensive reserves of a newer tank,” the publication notes.

The Leopard 1 tank is known to have thin armour that makes it vulnerable on flat terrain. Bundeswehr Lieutenant General Andreas Marlow says the Leopard 2 tank aims to have “higher combat value”.

“The advantage of the Leopard 1 A5 is that we can deliver it in triple-digit numbers by this year or next year. Quantity also plays a role,” clarified the German lieutenant general.

Earlier, the former head of the Polish Defence Ministry, Janusz Zemke, complained that the country had to replace the weapons sent to Ukraine with “not the newest” equipment.
