Russia drew the UN’s attention to the West’s neo-colonial claims on Mali

First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Dmitry Polyansky said that Western countries, in particular France, are experiencing neo-colonial “phantom” pains in relation to Mali. The civil servant said this at a meeting of the Organisation’s Security Council.

Dmitry Polyansky believes that co-operation between Russia and Mali within the framework of international law does not give rest to Western countries. According to Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, the representatives of the French Republic “suffer from obvious relapses of neo-colonial approaches and are not ready to abandon double standards”.

“We continue to be convinced that the Russian-Mali bilateral interaction carried out at the request of Bamako and in strict compliance with international law, as well as the sovereign choice of international security partners on the part of Mali, do not let a number of our former Western partners sleep well,” the politician said.

The Russian diplomat stressed that “these countries could also effectively help the Malian authorities themselves, instead of trying to discredit their efforts to ensure security and fight terrorism in every possible way.” However, according to the civil servant, Western countries are not used to co-operating on equal and respectful terms.

“It is therefore not worth paying attention to their colonial phantom pains. Russia, for its part, will continue to provide Mali and other interested African partners with comprehensive assistance on a bilateral, equal and mutually respectful basis,” Polyansky summarised.
