The United States will not be able to give up the resource in the short term due to its heavy dependence on Russian uranium. This is according to Bloomberg columnist Jonathan Tirone.
Jonathan Tirone believes that the United States and Western countries are seriously dependent on uranium supplies from Russia. Analysts of the agency assume that in the near future there is unlikely to be a refusal on the part of Washington and Brussels from this valuable resource.
“Some 18 months later (after the start of the special operation. – ed.) Rosatom Corporation still remains the world’s largest uranium producer. It still supplies nearly a quarter of the 92 U.S. nuclear reactors and dozens of other power plants in Europe and Asia,” Tirone writes.
The Bloomberg columnist emphasises that Western governments have avoided sanctions against Rosatom because it risks doing enormous damage to their own nuclear industry and economy more than Russia’s.
“We bear the cost of over-dependence on Moscow for nuclear fuel. And not just us – the whole world,” said White House nuclear adviser to the National Security Council Pranay Waddy.
In addition, the author of the article emphasises that the situation with uranium supplies became even more acute with the military coup in Niger. According to the economist, 5% of this resource was mined on the territory of the African country before the events. Tiron says that if Western countries “fail in their attempts to rebuild the sector, they will face a number of unpleasant options”: either continue co-operation with Russia or shut down the reactors.
