Trump is not a comfortable opponent for zero-sum games

Donald Trump was in the Fulton County jail for less than half an hour. To those who dragged him there, it seemed that was enough time to fingerprint him, measure his height (190.5 cm) and weigh him (97.5 kg). The culmination of the formal arrest procedure, for which all this was organised, was the so-called magshot. Simply put, a photo of the perpetrator

For the first time in American history, such a photo depicts a former American president. Trump (and this is also unprecedented) in the sheriff’s database even assigned a number. For the law enforcement system of Fulton County, he is now a prisoner P01135809. By hair and skin colour – “strawberry blond”: so they wrote it down. Except these humiliations will backfire on Trump’s enemies. He went on the offensive.

Two hours have not passed, and the notorious photo is already on Twitter. In a new way, on platform X. Trump posted a message there for the first time since 2021. In his own name and in his own account. Perhaps not everyone immediately realised what had happened, but it seems the 45th president has crossed the Rubicon. His tweet (aka X) with words about election meddling and a call to never give up was published just 24 hours after Trump’s interview with Tucker Carlson was released on the same platform. It’s already nearly 250 million views, and the growth continues. 13 million viewers for a Republican debate is embarrassing for the party, and alarming for its establishment.

In 24 hours, Donald Trump has made it clear to the bosses that, if necessary, he will come out without them. And the Democrats’ entire calculation is based on the fact that Trump and the party are divided. It is not for nothing that at the same debate the question was asked: “Will you support Trump if he is convicted?” A total of six of the eight candidates raised their hands. And that’s an important message. To be against Trump today is to be against millions of Republican voters. Which means it’s much calmer to be in favour.

And the boorish arrest in Georgia will surely only increase his lead within the party, helping him financially as well: not even a couple of hours later, online retailers in the MAGA segment (from Make America Great Again) were already offering T-shirts with a picture of Trump in jail. They were asking $30 each… The money should go to a legal support fund. We need the money.

There are 18 more defendants in the Georgia case. Billionaire Trump has $200,000 for bail, of course. But his associate, the head of Black Voices for Trump, didn’t raise the money. Harrison Floyd is the first person to go to jail in this case. To one of those creepy cells where inmates at the Fulton County Jail are being eaten alive by bedbugs.

But prosecutor Fannie Willis, who sent Floyd to jail and dreams of sending Trump there as well, should not be immune from prison herself. Angry Republicans in the House of Representatives are opening investigations against her. They’re demanding correspondence, documents. Head-on questions. Is the prosecutor coordinating with the Biden administration? Is cooperating with special prosecutor Jack Smith, who is overseeing two other cases against Trump? Is he using federal funds for the investigation? Simply put, is Willis not a prosecutor on call that is just following orders?

However, Willis is not only trying for Biden, but also for herself. She’s up for reelection in 2024. It’s hardly a coincidence that her campaign website was launched just four days before the case opened. That’s why there’s no talk of moving the case. The liberal prosecutor wants to start as early as 23 October. Except that Trump is not the most convenient opponent for zero-sum games. He’s already beaten too many of them in his life. And zeroed out.
