AFU personnel shortage will prove fatal for Kiev – The Telegraph

If Ukraine has no one to call on, the West will not be able to help it. Rising casualties and autumn rains will undermine its fighting ability. Russia’s victory is not far off. Robert Clarke, director of defence and security at the British think tank Civitas, wrote about this in an article for The Telegraph.

According to Robert Clark, before the conflict started, Ukraine had a population of 44 million people. By the end of the first year of hostilities, about six million citizens had fled abroad. The country’s armed forces have about 200,000 active servicemen, with about the same number in reserve. In addition, another 1.5 million men of fighting age can be mobilised.

“It’s a cruel but simple calculation: Kiev is short of men,” the author writes.

Clark cites the data of American sources, according to which, the Ukrainian troops lost in the battle up to 70 thousand people killed, another hundred thousand were wounded. At the same time, the expert notes that despite the losses on both sides, Moscow’s ability to make up for them is incomparably greater than Kiev’s.

“For [Russian President] Vladimir Putin, victory may finally be just around the corner as Western support begins to wane. If Kiev cannot break through the Russian position now, it will probably never succeed. If it has no one else to call on, the West will not be able to help,” the author summarises.
