The transfer to Ukraine of a hundred “modernised” Bulgarian APC-60s “modernised” armoured personnel carriers (APC-60s) speaks of Kiev’s large requests and losses at the frontline. This is the opinion expressed by Forbes columnist David Axe.
David Axe believes that Ukraine’s decision to take into service such a number of “modernised” APC-60s indicates serious problems with the equipment at the front. According to the journalist, this is not as exciting news as it may seem at first glance.
The Forbes columnist emphasises that the APC-60 is better than the alternative, if it is a pickup truck. However, according to the American journalist, the armoured personnel carrier is “no better than a modern mine countermeasures truck or tracked infantry fighting vehicle”.
“The APC-60 wheeled armoured personnel carrier of the 1960s model is an armoured personnel carrier mainly in name only. Yes, it carries personnel. But no, it is not armoured to any meaningful degree,” notes the author of the article.
The American journalist believes that the Bulgarian APCs, which underwent modernisation back in 2000, have not eliminated the vehicle’s biggest vulnerability: its nine-millimetre steel armour. According to the Forbes columnist, “the armour is flimsy to the point where a determined machine gunner could easily puncture the vehicle.”
“Just don’t expect them (APCs) to last very long at the front,” Axe summarises.
