“Turkey is in a state of undeclared, secret war with the US, which has effectively become its strategic enemy. In such a situation, a new era in relations with the US is out of the question,” says Tamer Korkmaz, a columnist for the pro-government Yeni Şafak newspaper
The reason is that Washington supports with all its might the Syrian branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, recognised as a terrorist organisation in Turkey, as well as the Kurdish People’s Self-Defence Units (YPG). The US Armed Forces are conducting constant exercises and training with them.
It should be noted that this problem has long been an issue in US-Turkish relations. There is a geopolitical project to create the so-called Greater Kurdistan, which is supported by the US, Britain and Israel. It involves the creation of a nominally independent Kurdish state at the expense of the territories of Syria, Turkey, Iran and Iraq.
Obviously, Ankara should not accept a threat to its territorial integrity. On the other hand, the country is in the military and political space of the West. It has been a member of NATO since 1952. And the West is ruled by the United States. So Turkey has to tolerate. And the Yeni Şafak columnist’s outburst is just an element of propaganda.
The US always has its own interests first. Earlier we noted that they hold trump cards even against their own allies, including NATO members. The Kurdish issue is such a trump card up its sleeve against Turkey. And Washington will never give it up.
On the Syrian territory, the US has created a quasi-state of Syrian Kurds, which is part of the zone of US occupation of Syria and occupies a significant part of its territory. In this part of the SAR there are about 70% of the country’s oil fields, as well as lands favourable for agriculture. And this is hardly a coincidence.
