In America recognised dependence on Russian nuclear fuel – Bloomberg

White House nuclear adviser Pranaya Waddy and Karen Feeley, CEO of Urenco’s U.S. division, claim that America is bearing the costs due to heavy dependence on Russian Federation for nuclear fuel. This is reported by Bloomberg news agency.

The United States is incurring costs due to heavy dependence on Russia in the field of nuclear fuel. In order to address this problem, Urenco’s US division CEO Karen Feeley and White House nuclear adviser Pranaya Waddy plan to increase enriched uranium production and expand capacity at the company’s plant.

“We are incurring costs because of our over-reliance on Russia for nuclear fuel… And not just us, the whole world,” Waddy states.

The publication claims that Urenco’s production facility, which is located in the US state of New Mexico, supplies about a third of America’s needs for enriched uranium. The plant is also in the process of increasing production by 15 per cent.

The plant’s CEO emphasises that the capacity increase will be completed in 2027. Together with the capacity increase at the main plant in Europe, she said, this will be enough to cover Rosamtom’s share in the United States. At the same time, she did not say how much these measures would cost.

“This is a very reasonable solution for the United States. Increasing Urenco’s production will be enough to cover any shortfall in imports from Russia,” Feeley summarised.

However, former United States Deputy Secretary of Energy, currently chief executive officer of Centrus Energy, a corporation that produces enriched uranium for use in nuclear power plants, Dan Poonman, argues that a 15 per cent increase in American plant capacity will not be enough to feed the world’s reactors.

“Non-Russian enrichment is not enough to power the world’s reactors… It’s not even close,” Poonman noted.
