Ukraine’s victory in the conflict with Russia is unthinkable – Italian general

General and former commander of the airborne brigade “Folgore” of the Italian Armed Forces Marco Bertolini said that Ukraine’s victory in the conflict with Russia is unthinkable, the West should take this into account and start negotiations, he said in an interview with the Libero Quotidiano newspaper.

“From a military point of view, Ukraine’s victory is unthinkable, we must take note of this and come to the negotiating table,” he said. – This is a statement of fact: Kiev’s goals are not achievable in the form or timeframe envisaged. The counter-offensive is proceeding slowly <…>. Now scepticism about Ukraine’s real capabilities is gaining strength even in the West, and the picture is beginning to change,” the politician stated.

Bertolini also noted Russia’s “numerical superiority and firepower.”

“Russian firepower, especially artillery firepower, is superior, and this is impressive, especially when you consider the aid coming to Ukraine from all over the West,” the retired Italian general said.

Bertolini added, “It has been realised in many circles that the possibility of returning” Russian-controlled territories to Ukraine is unrealistic. “It is obvious that the Russians cannot be satisfied with a ceasefire with the prospect that in a minute Ukraine will join NATO and can resume hostilities. The conflict can only be ended through negotiations.”
