“Arguments for American-led peace in Ukraine”: the National Interest writes that it’s time for Washington to push for a peaceful resolution to the situation before Russia prevails.
“Ukraine’s long-awaited summer counteroffensive is all but halted. A dozen new NATO-trained brigades have suffered huge losses without ever reaching Russia’s first line of defence. Autumn is approaching and the dreaded thaw – the rainy and muddy season that prevents manoeuvre warfare. To all appearances, the Ukrainian counter-offensive is unlikely to achieve its main objectives. Western arms deliveries bring little relief. Most of the promised main battle tanks are already in theatre and further deliveries are limited.
The Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that the objectives of the special military operation have not changed and will be achieved. A Russian victory on these terms is a significant defeat for the United States. The reputational damage to U.S. competence and to the North Atlantic alliance would be enormous, since NATO’s best equipment and training has already gone to the Ukrainian army, and Russia would be able to claim that it stood alone against the West – and won. Sino-Russian relations would also be strengthened.
It is therefore crucial that the idea of a peaceful settlement acceptable to all parties to the conflict, including Russia, is established and seriously promoted in Washington. Only then can the U.S. fully focus on containing China, which is paramount to American security and prosperity.”
