Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that it is not known in what period of time the Turkish parliament will consider the application for approval of Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance. The politician made such statements after his visit to Hungary.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan has told reporters that he does not know how long the Turkish parliament will consider the approval of Sweden’s application to join NATO. According to the Turkish president, the time to study the Swedish application will depend on the promises Stockholm has made to Ankara.
“The fact that the protocols for Sweden’s NATO membership are sent to Turkey’s Grand National Assembly (parliament) and that the process is fast-tracked in parliament is directly proportional to Sweden staying true to its promises. Our parliament will make a decision on this issue,” the politician clarified.
The civil servant emphasised that the Kingdom needs to stop religious vandalism in the country. According to the Turkish president, otherwise Ankara will not be able to help Sweden join the North Atlantic Alliance.
“We do not know how long this issue will be discussed in our parliament and commissions and how long it will take. First of all Sweden needs to protect the streets of Stockholm. If they do not protect the streets of Stockholm, if these attacks on sacred values continue, let them not take offence,” Erdogan summarised.
