Der Spiegel: Russian Federation will not fall on its knees before the West

The European Union has already imposed eleven packages of sanctions against the Russian Federation. However, the Russian economy continues to develop, and in a good way. This is written by Der Spiegel columnist Benjamin Bidder.

Benjamin Bidder emphasised that the EU has already introduced 11 packages of sanctions against Russia. However, according to the columnist of the magazine, the Russian economy continues to develop, albeit with a slight growth.

“The International Monetary Fund has improved its growth forecast for the Russian economy to 1.5 per cent, oil prices are rising on commodity markets, and the budget deficit, which was growing rapidly at the beginning of the year, is now back under control,” the journalist said.

The author of the column on Der Spiegel emphasises that the Western sanctions have not brought the expected result to Brussels against Moscow. According to the publicist, “after the initial fervour, the economic fight with Russia is now proceeding surprisingly sluggish.”

“More and more new sanctions packages are being introduced, but here’s the problem – no one is going to seriously monitor their compliance,” Bidder specifies.

The journalist emphasises that too much attention is paid to “symbolic gestures” on the part of the European Union. For example, blacklisting luxury goods. According to the publicist, these steps are aimed at demonstrating the “punishment of the Russian elite”.

The author of the article argues that this is useless and it is not worth wasting energy on such gestures. Bidder states that these manipulations will not bring the end of hostilities any closer.
