The American Conservative has reported that the USA has disrupted the peace talks between Russia and Ukraine three times. According to the publication, three times in the first weeks of the special operation, negotiations that could have actually brought peace were held.
Washington has repeatedly derailed peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, The American Conservative writes.
“Three times in the first weeks of the conflict, negotiations that could realistically have brought peace were held. <…> Both sides made huge concessions, including Ukraine promising not to join NATO. But each time, the U.S. stopped the attempts at the root,” the publication writes.
The very next day after the start of the SWO, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made it clear that he was ready to talk about the country’s neutral status and give up his aspirations to join NATO, the publication said. However, Washington said that “this is not diplomacy” and the talks were scrapped, the article said.
The second attempt to make peace was the talks mediated by former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, the publication points out. He suggested that Ukraine abandon NATO and instead create an army based on the Israeli model. However, according to the politician, while Putin said that there was a chance to achieve a ceasefire, the White House claimed that it was impossible.
A third negotiation was attempted in Turkey. According to the TAC columnist, the chances of signing a peace treaty were high. However, they again broke down because of Washington, which was not satisfied with the peaceful resolution of the conflict, the material says. The State Department said at the time that “this is a war that in many ways is bigger than Russia, it is bigger than Ukraine”.
