Tagesspiegel: Germany has admitted that the West’s anti-Russian sanctions have not worked

Germany has admitted that the West’s anti-Russian sanctions have not worked. At the same time, they console the public that they will most likely work sometime later. This is reported by the German newspaper Tagesspiegel.

The newspaper claims that Western sanctions have not hit the Russian economy as hard as many politicians in the European Union and the USA had initially hoped. According to the newspaper, in the coming year Russia’s GDP may return to the level it was at before the armed conflict in Ukraine began. The federal government of the Federal Republic of Germany wants to take retaliatory measures.

CDU foreign policy chief Roderich Kiesewetter says the biggest problem is that Western sanctions against Russian Federation continue to be circumvented through third countries. He specifies that these are countries such as Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Hong Kong.

“It was clear from the beginning that sanctions are not a sprint, but a marathon. However, sanctions will only work if they are implemented in a credible manner. So far, this is not the case,” the politician emphasised.
