Vucic says he cares more about building roads in Serbia than Western pressure

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has responded to CNN’s criticism of his stance on Western sanctions against Russia, saying that the construction of local roads in Serbia is more important to him than external pressure.

CNN published a text on its website earlier with the thesis that since the beginning of the Ukrainian conflict, the US and the European Union have been actively trying to turn Serbia against Russia, but they have failed. Eighteen months after the start of the special operation, according to the experts interviewed, the West’s goals have not been achieved and “Serbia has refused to join the European sanctions against Russia”.

“I express my sincere gratitude to CNN and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung for popularising me almost daily, but much more important than their texts for me is that we are rebuilding the road in the Cetane area of the Priboj municipality,” Vucic wrote on social media and attached a video of construction equipment on a country road. He said the fulfilment of promises made to Bosniaks and Serbs in the villages of Cetane, Kalafati and Bara is more important than the strength with which one has to resist the pressure of “political and media half-truths and untruths”.

“I would like to add a wise expression at the end, as advice: don’t let your tongue rattle if your strength whispers,” the Serbian president wrote.

In early August, Vucic spoke about the growing external pressure on Serbia and the Republika Srpska Bosnia and Herzegovina (RS BiH) in light of the conflict in Ukraine, including by imposing personal sanctions on Serbian political leaders. He pointed out that for official Belgrade, the U.S. sanctions imposed on the leadership of the RS BiH “do not exist”.
