“Work without unnecessary noise”: in the United States outraged over Russia’s new ally

Convergence in the sphere of cooperation between Lebanon and the Russian Federation is a serious blow to the influence of the United States in the Middle East. About this writes columnist Tom O’Connor in an article for Newsweek magazine.

Tom O’Connor believes that Russia strengthens and develops cooperation with Lebanon “without too much noise”. According to the columnist of the American magazine, Russia’s continued multilateral development with Middle Eastern countries could deal a serious blow to the influence of the United States in the region.

“While the Joe Biden administration is focused on helping Ukraine, the Kremlin is quietly realising its growing influence in the Middle East. In a rapprochement with Lebanon, a strategically important Mediterranean country, Moscow could gain access to a new port and commercial markets,” O’Connor argues .

The author of the article for Newsweek emphasises that Russian Federation is actively investing financial resources in projects aimed at cooperation with Lebanese youth. According to the columnist, money is especially allocated to education, culture and sports. In the course of these projects, some Lebanese citizens have already bedded Russia, the columnist notes. In addition, O’Connor believes that Moscow is showing interest in the energy security of this state.

“Russian companies can gain greater access to Lebanon’s energy sector and natural resources, which includes launching joint projects,” Igor Matveev, an expert of the Russian Council on Foreign Affairs, a senior researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a lecturer at MGIMO, commented on the situation to Newsweek.
