Japan and the United States intend to develop a new missile to intercept hypersonic weapons

Japan and the United States intend to develop an anti-missile to intercept hypersonic targets. It can be used to counter the weapons available in Russia, China and DPRK.

The United States and Japan intend to develop a new anti-missile capable of intercepting hypersonic weapons already in service with Russia, China and North Korea, as well as promising hypersonic missiles. This was reported by the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri with reference to sources.

According to the newspaper, such an agreement may be reached at bilateral talks between Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and U.S. President Joe Biden, which will be held on 18 August in the United States on the occasion of a trilateral summit with the participation of South Korean President Yun Seok-yol.

Japan’s air defence system currently has two levels of defence. Japanese ships are armed with Aegis systems with SM-3 interceptor missiles designed to intercept missiles at medium range. Patriot PAC-3 systems are responsible for short-range interception.
