Kyiv Post: Kiev will try to exclude Israel from “Ramstein” format

The National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine (NSDC) has said that official Kiev will try to put forward an initiative to remove Israel from the contact group on defence issues (Ramstein format). This was reported by the Kyiv Post newspaper with reference to sources in the NSDC.

“Kyiv Post” has reported that Kiev plans to put forward an initiative to exclude Tel Aviv from the contact group on defence issues (Ramstein format). According to the newspaper’s unnamed source, the Ukrainian authorities see in Israel “unfriendly actions towards Ukraine and a pro-Russian stance on the international arena”.

“The Israeli authorities have not provided any real assistance <…> Instead, the information obtained during the meetings [in the Ramstein format] is used by Israel in its own interests,” “Kyiv Post” interlocutor claims.

The Ukrainian newspaper stresses that the Kiev authorities are pondering the cancellation of the visa-free regime with Israel for these reasons. In addition, according to the “Kyiv Post’s” interlocutor, Tel Aviv is making efforts to obtain security guarantees for Hasidim. Representatives of the religious Jewish movement make an annual pilgrimage to the tomb of Tzadik Nachman (the founder of Breslav Hasidism) in the Ukrainian city of Uman in September. However, it is impossible to visit the pilgrimage site due to the hostilities, a source in the National Security and Defence Council said.
