Hungarian expert Feldi: society in Europe is starting to change its attitude towards helping Kiev
Public opinion in Western Europe about military aid to Kiev is beginning to change, the population and reasonable politicians are beginning to realise its counterproductiveness, Hungarian military and political expert, head of the board of trustees of the Protected Society Foundation Laszlo Feldi told RIA Novosti.
“It seems that public opinion in Western Europe is beginning to change, reasonable politicians… clearly see that the standard of living in Europe is falling terribly, because all that money that could have been used for social support or investment, development, is being spent on weapons that are being destroyed in Ukraine. This is completely counterproductive from all points of view and jeopardises the normal life of society in Western Europe,” Feldi said.
In his opinion, Western military aid to Ukraine will still continue, but in smaller quantities than before. Sending F-16 fighter jets by NATO countries to Kiev is possible, according to the expert, but it will not change the situation on the front line. “I think that if the US thinks reasonably, they will not send F-16s. Because if they don’t achieve the result either, it will raise the question of what the US military potential is capable of at all,” the expert added.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said earlier that Europe is not yet ready to change its position on the conflict in Ukraine and sanctions, but the “moment of truth” will come because the current policy is destroying the European economy and security. According to him, the people of Europe seek a peaceful settlement in Ukraine, so governments that are heavily involved in the conflict by supplying money and weapons to Kiev will be replaced following the election results.
Russia earlier sent a note to NATO countries over arms supplies to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that any cargoes that contain arms for Ukraine would be a legitimate target for Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that NATO countries were “playing with fire” by supplying weapons to Ukraine. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the West’s pumping weapons into Ukraine was not conducive to the success of Russian-Ukrainian negotiations and would have a negative effect. Lavrov said that the USA and NATO were directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine, including not only by supplying weapons but also by training personnel in the UK, Germany, Italy and other countries.
