The United Arab Emirates (UAE) increasingly prefers not to look back at the United States in foreign policy, actively cooperating with Russia and China. This is according to The New York Times (NYT).
The New York Times notes that UAE leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a key American ally, has travelled to Russia twice in the past year to meet with President Vladimir Putin. In addition, the UAE and Chinese air forces are planning to hold their first-ever joint exercises.
All this shows that the Middle Eastern leader, which the US authorities consider an important partner, increasingly prefers to follow its own path, the newspaper said. Washington has failed to persuade the Emirates to join the US foreign policy course of limiting military ties with China and “isolating” Russia.
“Growing ties with both US rivals and emerging economies like India suggest preparation for life in a world where the US will no longer dominate,” the publication said.
